Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Leads Disney+ September Slate

LOS ANGELES, September 19 — The story begins, as these things so often do, with a galaxy far, far away — and a very small, very green apprentice. Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu arrived on Disney+ on September 2, the headline release in a September slate that a Disney+ contributor roundup, revised September 17, describes as a new wave of movies, shows, sports and more across Disney+, Hulu and ESPN.

At its heart, the premise is a familiar one for Star Wars devotees: the evil Empire has fallen, Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy, and the fledgling New Republic — working to protect everything the Rebellion fought for — enlists the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his young apprentice Grogu. That pairing, a lone warrior and a child he never planned to raise, has been the emotional engine of the series since it first aired.

Now it anchors the month’s biggest streaming arrival.

A crowded September across the platforms

Over on Hulu, the season premiere of Chad Powers lands on September 3. The show centres on a superstar on the field whose odd off-field behaviour has everyone suspicious — especially Coach Hudson and Gerry. The walls are closing in on Russ’s lie, and if he and Danny want Chad to survive the regular season and lead the Catfish to the College Football Playoff, the only person who can help them is the last person who wants to: Ricky.

FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga rolls out new episodes on Hulu on September 8, 15, 22 and 29. It follows Snowfall characters Wanda Bell, played by Gail Bean, and Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John, as they fight to reinvent themselves in 90s Los Angeles, where the fallout from the crack epidemic is fuelling a new game — the rise of West Coast rap.

A deep bench of films

A large slate of films lands on Hulu on September 1, and it is nothing if not varied. David O.

Russell’s Amsterdam is an original crime epic about three close friends at the centre of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history, weaving historical fact with fiction. The Bob’s Burgers Movie follows a ruptured water main that creates an enormous sinkhole in front of Bob’s Burgers, blocking the entrance and ruining the Belchers’ summer plans; while Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save the restaurant. Burlesque follows a star-struck small-town girl who arrives in Los Angeles, finds work at a failing burlesque club, and whose singing talent threatens to outgrow the small venue. Coraline follows an adventurous 11-year-old girl who stumbles upon another world that is a rosier version of her frustrating home — but this alternate dimension harbours sinister secrets.

Two Ice Age titles join the list. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs sends Manny, Sid, Diego and Scrat to a mysterious underground world inhabited by dinosaurs and a one-eyed weasel named Buck. Ice Age: The Meltdown sees Manny, Sid and Diego discover that miles of melted ice will soon flood their valley, forcing them to warn everyone and find a way to escape the coming deluge.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, in which a Nazi-scalping squad of American soldiers known as “The Basterds” undertakes a daring mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich as war rages in Europe, also arrives; Christoph Waltz received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film. Jennifer’s Body stars Megan Fox in a horror-comedy about a high school cheerleader who develops an insatiable appetite for her male classmates after she’s possessed by a hungry demon. Jerry Maguire stars Tom Cruise as a sports agent who discovers his scruples and promptly loses his job, but with the help of one loyal colleague and one outrageous client learns that loving well is the best revenge; it co-stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., Renee Zellweger, Regina King and Bonnie Hunt.

And Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, set three years after the theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment, follows Owen, played by Chris Pratt, and Claire, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, as they mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from an extinction-level event when Isla Nublar’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life.

The source notes that additional titles continue beyond those listed, and that these releases are likely to surface throughout the month via family
