How Michael Strahan Pivoted From NFL Star To Multi-Hyphenate Mogul

Michael Strahan is pulling back the curtain on the biggest names in fashion, television and music in a new iconic series, offering a view from a career that has moved strategically across each of those industries for more than three decades.

Early Life and NFL Dominance

Born in Houston in 1971, Strahan spent part of his childhood at a U.S. Army post in Mannheim, West Germany, before returning to Texas for his senior year of high school. He followed his uncle, former NFL lineman Art Strahan, to Texas Southern University, where he recorded a school-record 19 sacks as a senior and earned Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year honors. The New York Giants selected him in the second round of the 1993 draft, beginning a 15-season career defined by a single-season NFL record of 22.5 quarterback sacks in 2001. He capped his final season in 2007 with a victory in Super Bowl XLII and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Transition to Media Personality

Strahan joined Fox as a studio analyst for Fox NFL Sunday immediately after retiring in 2008, a role he still holds alongside Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Rob Gronkowski. He moved to ABC in 2012 as co-host of Live! with Kelly and Michael, winning two Daytime Emmy Awards before signing on as a full-time co-anchor of Good Morning America in 2016. His broadcasting work has earned him a Peabody Award, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023. Fellow GMA anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos are scheduled to receive their stars on November 5, 2026, as part of the Walk of Fame’s class of 2026.

Business Ventures and Brand Expansion

Strahan founded SMAC Entertainment, a talent management and production company, and launched the Michael Strahan Brand, a lifestyle and apparel platform. The portfolio extends his reach beyond the studio into fashion and content production, positioning him as a multi-hyphenate mogul whose business interests mirror his on-air versatility.

Space Flight Milestone

On December 11, 2021, Strahan flew aboard Blue Origin’s NS-19 mission. At 6 feet 5 inches, he became the tallest person to fly in space, adding a singular physical footnote to a career built on breaking barriers.

Recent Recognition and What Comes Next

On October 27, 2026, the Clio Sports Awards announced Strahan as the recipient of an Honorary Award. The ceremony, which celebrates those who communicate and push boundaries in sports, is scheduled for December 8 in New York City. He is set to appear on Fox NFL Sunday at noon ET on November 8, 2026, as part of the network’s Veterans Day weekend tribute at Annapolis and West Point.
