MINNEAPOLIS, September 23 — The story begins, as so many medical dramas do, with a doctor who knows everything. Then it takes that certainty away. Dr. Amy Elias, the brilliant and abrasive chief of internal medicine at a fictional Minneapolis hospital, wakes from a head injury with several years of her life erased — her divorce, the death of her son, all of it gone.
She must rebuild herself inside a world that has moved on without her, while the colleagues and estranged family around her adjust to the person she has become. That premise belongs to Doc, the American medical drama that premiered on Fox on January 7, 2025, and which Fox renewed for a second season on February 25, 2025.
The renewal came before the first season had finished its run, a signal of confidence from the network. The ten-episode first season concluded on March 18, 2025, ending on a cliffhanger involving Dr. Elias’s professional future and her evolving relationships with her colleagues.
A story borrowed, and then made new
The American Doc is adapted from the Italian series Doc — Nelle tue mani, known in English as Doc — In Your Hands. That original, created by Francesco Arlanch and produced by Lux Vide, premiered on Rai 1 in 2020 and became a ratings hit in Italy, running for four seasons and spawning international remakes. It is available on Netflix in some territories.
The Italian show was itself inspired by the real-life story of a physician who lost roughly twelve years of personal memories after a traumatic brain injury and had to rebuild his life and career. The American version was developed for Fox by Barbie Kligman, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, and was ordered to series in May 2024.
It is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, and distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television. The cast is led by Molly Parker, alongside Omar Metwally, Amirah Vann, Jon Ecker, Anya Banerjee, and Scott Wolf.
Why the amnesia hook landed
Critics and audiences have compared the show to other medical dramas such as House and The Good Doctor, but its distinguishing feature is the amnesia-driven premise, which forces the protagonist to rediscover both her professional instincts and her personal relationships. The show has been noted for its diverse cast and for placing a female lead at the centre of a genre traditionally dominated by male protagonists. Its first season averaged solid ratings for Fox, ranking among the network’s stronger scripted performers — a performance that contributed to the early renewal.
The second season is scheduled to premiere in the 2025–26 television season, with Fox having said it expects a fall 2025 or midseason 2026 launch. No specific premiere date has been announced.
The cast and creative team have indicated that Season 2 will explore new medical cases while deepening the character arcs established in the first season. The episode count for the second season has not been specified. Production films in Toronto, Canada, standing in for Minneapolis. Doc airs on Fox and streams on Hulu in the United States.
At its heart, the show sits within a broader trend of American networks adapting successful international formats, following the model of series like The Office and Shameless, both of which travelled from the UK to the US. Doc also joins a crowded field of medical dramas on American broadcast television, alongside ABC’s The Good Doctor, which concluded in 2024, and NBC’s Chicago Med. What to watch next: a confirmed premiere date for Season 2, and whether the cliffhanger that closed the first season resolves in Dr. Elias’s favour.
For now, Fox has committed only to the 2025–26 window.
