LOS ANGELES, September 23 — Amazon’s Prime Video is filling out the ranks of its limited series about the Space Shuttle Challenger, announcing six new cast members for a production that keeps growing wider in scope. The streamer named William Fichtner, Kevin Carroll, Eric Lange, Adelaide Clemens, Louisa Jacobson and Hunter Burke to the ensemble. The additions were announced Wednesday.
The series, titled “The Challenger,” dramatizes the events surrounding the Challenger mission, which broke apart seconds after liftoff on January 28, 1986, killing all seven crew members aboard. The disaster became a defining moment in American spaceflight and prompted a nearly three-year hiatus in shuttle launches.
A deep bench of character actors
Fichtner is a veteran character actor known for roles in “Prison Break” and films such as “Armageddon” and “The Dark Knight.” Carroll has appeared in “The Wire” and “Snowfall.” Lange is known for “Narcos” and “Escape at Dannemora.” Clemens starred in “Rectify” and “The Great Gatsby.” Jacobson is a lead in HBO’s “The Gilded Age.” Burke has appeared in “Sweet Magnolias” and “Queen Sugar.” Amazon did not say what roles any of them will play.
The six join a production that has been assembling a large ensemble to portray NASA officials, engineers, astronauts and family members. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
No premiere date has been announced.
Why the story still pulls
The Challenger disaster remains a subject of public fascination, with numerous documentaries and books examining the technical failures and organizational pressures that led to the tragedy. It was the first fatal accident involving an American spacecraft in flight, and it led to major changes in NASA’s safety protocols. The scale of the casting suggests the production is moving forward with a broad canvas, likely exploring the lives of those involved before and after the accident.
The series is part of a growing trend of scripted dramas based on real-life space disasters and NASA history. Watch for Amazon to attach names to the roles and, eventually, a launch date for the series itself.
