Guadagnino confirms $50 billion Amazon-OpenAI deal stalled his film

The Amazon MGM deal with OpenAI was worth USD 50 billion. That is the number that sits at the center of Luca Guadagnino’s stalled film “Artificial.” The Italian director confirmed on Friday that commercial and political pressure led the studio to shelve his project. He would not say more.

“Unfortunately, I can’t say much because we are right in the middle of this situation,” he told the Italian talk show “Otto e Mezzo” on La7 Attualita. The math is simple.

Amazon MGM invested fifty billion dollars in expanding OpenAI’s use of Amazon Web Services and developing custom AI models. Guadagnino’s film stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI chief Sam Altman. The studio dropped the movie several months after the partnership was announced.

The director did not have to connect the dots for his audience. He instead reached for a historical parallel.

In 2003, CBS cancelled a major drama series about the Reagans after Republicans applied pressure. The show eventually aired on a smaller channel. “It’s far from the first time this type of commercial and political pressure has happened,” Guadagnino said.

The comparison is not perfect. The Reagan drama faced political objections from one party. The Guadagnino film faces objections from a corporate partner worth tens of billions.

MUBI remains in consideration to pick up the project. Netflix, A24 and Focus Features have already passed.

That is a short list. The film is not dead, but it is wounded. Guadagnino shifted the conversation to the broader AI debate.

He made a clear distinction. His concern is not the technology itself.

“The issue isn’t artificial intelligence itself — the tool used to generate products of knowledge or creative works,” he said. He called it a technological gadget, one full of flaws that will likely improve. His worry is social consequences.

The scientists who developed artificial general intelligence believe something. He did not finish that thought on the show. The director is in the middle of this situation.

That phrase matters. He is not outside it, observing.

He is inside it, caught between a studio, a streaming partner, and a fifty-billion-dollar deal. His film is about the man at the center of the AI boom, and the company that boom enriched just happened to be the one that killed his movie. There is no official statement from Amazon MGM.

Guadagnino gave no details about the mechanics of the decision. He said only that commercial and political pressure existed.

The timing is the thing. The deal came first. The shelving came second.

The director cannot talk, and the studio is not talking. The silence itself is the story. The parallel to 2003 is instructive.

That series eventually aired. MUBI is a smaller channel in this analogy.

Whether the film finds a home depends on whether any distributor is willing to take on the risk. The risk is not artistic. It is financial.

It is relational. It is the risk of annoying a company that just committed fifty billion dollars to a technology partner.

Guadagnino said the tool is not sophisticated. He said it has flaws. He also said it will improve.

The question he left hanging is what happens when it does. The scientists who built it have their own beliefs. The director has his.

And his film, for now, sits on a shelf.
