Daisy Ridley is set to lead a reimagining of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea for Paramount+, a project developed by Legendary Television in association with the Irwin Allen Estate.
A Modern Captain for an Iconic Submarine
The new series centers on Lee Crane, a brilliant ocean scientist portrayed by Ridley. She joins a classified government program following a catastrophic Arctic expedition that claims the life of her twin sister.
At the heart of this operation is the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine discovered entombed in ice. Sources close to production indicate the vessel powers up only when Lee Crane steps aboard.
Ridley will executive produce alongside writer Akiva Goldsman and director Matt Shakman. The writers’ room is currently underway as the team works on the script.
The Original Film and Its Legacy
The reboot draws inspiration from a 1961 American science fiction disaster film produced and directed by Irwin Allen. The original production starred Walter Pidgeon and Robert Sterling, with supporting cast members including Peter Lorre, Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden, Michael Ansara, and Frankie Avalon.
The film’s storyline was written by Irwin Allen and Charles Bennett. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox and featured an opening title credits theme song sung by Avalon.
In that original narrative, a state-of-the-art nuclear submarine named the Seaview is on diving trials in the Arctic Ocean. The mission involves being out of radio contact for 96 hours while under the Arctic ice cap.
The polar ice begins to crack and melt, with boulder-size pieces sinking into the ocean around the submerged submarine. Upon surfacing, the crew discovers the sky is on fire after a meteor shower sets it ablaze during their passage through the Van Allen radiation belt.
Environmental Themes in the New Narrative
The new Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea series follows Lee Crane as she leads the submarine on daring undersea missions. These missions are designed to contain mysterious forces leaking into our world.
While navigating these threats, the crew uncovers a hidden truth about the oceans and an erased chapter of human history. The narrative includes references to the once-thought mythical city of Atlantis.
The story explores how increasing global temperatures can become irreversible if not stopped quickly. In the original film, calculations suggested that if the temperature rise continued, the Earth could die in about three weeks.
The plot involves a plan to extinguish a fire by launching a nuclear missile at the burning belt from the Mariana Islands. This action was intended to amputate the belt from the Earth to save the planet.
Creative Team and Production Details
Ridley is best known for her breakthrough role as Rey in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She reprised the role in subsequent films including Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
Most recently, she starred in the survival thriller We Bury the Dead and the London-set action-thriller Cleaner alongside Clive Owen. Additional credits include the films The Marsh King’s Daughter, Chaos Walking, Ophelia, Murder on the Orient Express, and Peter Rabbit.
Ridley has also starred in multiple TV shows across her career, including Mr. Selfridge, Toast of London, Younger, and Casualty. She will soon be seen in Tim West’s fantasy adventure, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, playing Ridley the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
Jon Jashni will serve as executive producer with Derek Thielges acting as co-producer on the project. The production team aims to balance the retro aesthetic of the 1960s classic with modern ocean conservation themes.
The original film features a subplot where an unsuccessful attempt on the Admiral’s life indicates a saboteur is aboard. Alvarez, a religious zealot regarding the catastrophe, is suspected of sabotage in the original storyline.
Dr. Susan Hiller, who privately supports Dr. Zucco’s plan to let the fire burn out, is another suspect in the original plot. The Seaview’s main generator is then sabotaged by a crew member who lost his mind in that version.
Nelson and Emery propose extinguishing the fire by launching a nuclear missile at the burning belt from the Mariana Islands. A nuclear explosion should extinguish the flames, amputating the belt from the Earth according to their calculations.
The chief scientist and head delegate, Vienna’s Emilio Zucco, rejects Nelson’s plan as too risky. He believes the composition of the belt’s gasses will cause the fire to soon burn itself out without intervention.
Nelson disagrees with Zucco’s theory, claiming that his estimated burn-out point is incorrect. However, Nelson and Emery’s plan is rejected by the United Nations Emergency Scientific meeting initially.
The Seaview races to reach the optimal firing position above the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench in time for the needed angle of trajectory. Nelson and Crane attempt tapping the Rio-to-London telephone cable, trying to reach the President.
During the cable tapping attempt, Crane and Alvarez battle a giant squid. They can only tap into the London cable, and Nelson learns there has been no contact with the U.S. for 35 hours.
The early findings suggest this reboot will tackle climate threats while preserving its retro-futuristic submarine legacy. The project represents a significant return to small screen television for Ridley after her extensive work in film.
Patients should talk to their doctor about any health concerns they may have. The encouraging part of this story is how it brings together new talent with classic storytelling traditions.
Legacy of the Original Submarine and Its Modern Reinterpretation
The original Seaview submarine, as depicted in the 1961 film, was a state-of-the-art nuclear vessel designed by scientist Admiral Harriman Nelson. In the new series, the retro-futuristic USS Seaview is reimagined as a vessel with advanced technology that seems to be ahead of its time, marked with symbols from a history that shouldn’t exist. This mysterious element adds a layer of intrigue to the reboot, suggesting that the submarine may hold secrets tied to Atlantis or other lost civilizations.
While the original film centered on the Seaview’s mission to combat a global catastrophe caused by a burning Van Allen radiation belt, the new series explores the submarine’s role in containing mysterious forces leaking into the world. The reboot’s writers have drawn inspiration from the original’s themes of scientific discovery and global crisis, but with a modern twist that emphasizes ocean conservation and the potential consequences of humanity’s actions on the environment.
