LONDON, June 18 — The shift is towards greater awareness of prostate cancer, as Jeremy Clarkson’s recent diagnosis has brought attention to the disease. Clarkson’s Farm viewers were left devastated after the show’s season five finale revealed that Jeremy Clarkson is battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He warned before the finale was released that it was a ‘difficult watch’, and in the episode, he told Charlie Ireland and Kaleb Cooper, who run Diddly Squat Farm with him, “I’ve got cancer,” adding that he’d known since May.

According to the NHS, one in eight men will get prostate cancer in the UK, a statistic also shared by the American Cancer Society. Men are typically older when they develop prostate cancer.

Per the American Cancer Society, six in 10 prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older. The average age somebody is diagnosed is 67. Race also plays a factor in prostate cancer, as one in four Black men will get it, according to the American Cancer Society.

There is ongoing research into why this is the case. What’s changing is our understanding of prostate cancer and its risks.

The NHS explains that the prostate is a small gland that sits below the bladder and helps make semen. Cancer develops in this area of the body when cells grow in a way they shouldn’t. Some cases of prostate cancer are slow developing and don’t need immediate treatment, but in instances like Clarkson’s, it can grow fast and more aggressively, meaning treatment is needed straight away.

Watch this space, as research into prostate cancer continues to evolve. The fact that doctors told Jeremy Clarkson they’d caught his cancer early is a hopeful sign, and it highlights the importance of early detection and treatment. As we look to the future, it’s clear that there will be more breakthroughs in our understanding of this disease, and that’s what gives us hope for better outcomes for those affected.
