How Lady Gaga and Boy George Are Redefining Modern Music Legacy in the Songwriters Hall of Fame

The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced its 2027 ballot on November 5, 2026, nominating Lady Gaga, Boy George, Shakira, Pink, Jack White, and 21 other songwriters across performing and non-performing categories. Eligible voting members have until December 14, 2026, to cast ballots for up to three nominees in each category, with the final inductees expected to be revealed in early 2027.

The Institution and Its Mission

Founded in 1969 by Johnny Mercer, Abe Olman, and Howie Richmond, the Songwriters Hall of Fame exists to honor those whose work preserves and advances the heritage of English-language popular music. Nile Rodgers has served as chairman since 2018. The organization supports new talent through workshops, showcases, and scholarships, and maintains an exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, though it has no permanent physical home. The inaugural 1969 class inducted 120 individuals, including the partnership of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Through 2019, the Hall had inducted 461 individuals.

Eligibility and the 20-Year Rule

A songwriter qualifies for induction 20 years after their first commercial release. Lady Gaga’s debut single, “Just Dance” featuring Colby O’Donis, arrived in April 2008, placing her just inside the eligibility window for the 2027 class. The rule applies equally to performing songwriters and those who write primarily for others. The 2027 ballot features 26 nominees competing for six induction slots, divided evenly between the two categories.

The Voting Process

Eligible members vote through December 14, 2026, selecting up to three candidates in each of the performing and non-performing songwriter categories. The induction ceremony is scheduled for the 2027 Induction & Awards Gala in New York City. Appearance on the ballot does not guarantee entry; the November announcement opens the selection process rather than concluding it.

Performing Songwriter Nominees

The performing songwriter category includes Lady Gaga, Boy George, Shakira, Pink, Jack White, Sia, Vince Gill, Ne-Yo, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, and members of War and ZZ Top. Eight members of War — five living and three deceased — are nominated together; if inducted, they would become the largest ensemble in the Hall, surpassing the six-member Isley Brothers inducted in 2022. Jerry Goldstein, 86, appears twice on the ballot: as a member of War in the performing category and in the non-performing category for his work with Bob Feldman and Richard Gottehrer. Frank Beard and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top are nominated posthumously alongside Billy Gibbons.

Non-Performing Songwriter Nominees

The non-performing category includes Bob McDill, Tom Douglas, Dan Wilson, Andreas Carlsson, Toni Wine, Pete Bellotte, Jerry Goldstein, Richard Gottehrer, and others. McDill wrote “Amanda,” “Good Ole Boys Like Me,” “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” and “Song of the South.” Douglas co-wrote “The House That Built Me,” “Grown Men Don’t Cry,” “I Run to You,” and “Little Rock.” Wilson wrote “Closing Time,” “Someone Like You,” “Not Ready to Make Nice,” and co-wrote Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse.” Carlsson co-wrote major hits with Max Martin, a 2017 inductee. Wine co-wrote the 1966 smash “A Groovy Kind of Love” with Carole Bayer Sager, inducted in 1987. Bellotte wrote many hits with Donna Summer, inducted posthumously in 2025.

Cultural Weight of the 2027 Class

Lady Gaga’s catalog — “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” “Born This Way,” “Shallow,” “Die With a Smile” — spans dance-pop, ballads, and film scores, earning her an Oscar for best original song. Boy George, born George Alan O’Dowd, defined 1980s new wave with Culture Club hits including “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.” Shakira and Pink bring global pop and rock repertoires that have shaped radio and streaming eras alike. Jack White’s nomination recognizes a songwriting footprint across the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and solo work. Ne-Yo, a 2010 Hal David Starlight Award recipient, could become the second Starlight honoree to graduate to full induction after Taylor Swift. Vince Gill holds a record four CMA Song of the Year wins. The ballot reflects a deliberate bridging of generations, placing contemporary pop architects alongside the writers who built the foundations of modern popular music.

The final inductees will be announced in early 2027.
