HARARE, June 25 — In a crowded suburb, a group of boys darts back and forth across a smooth concrete floor, firing a series of rapid punches into the air, under the watchful eye of a wiry older man, Arifonso Zvenyika, also known as “Mosquito”, a successful boxer from Zimbabwe.

Zvenyika’s story is one of triumph and struggle, having won the Commonwealth flyweight title in 1998, but now living hand to mouth, hustling to make ends meet in a country where a significant portion of working-age adults are not formally employed. Despite his own struggles, Zvenyika trains young people at the Mosquito Boxing School of Excellence, without charging them a fee.

He particularly focuses on boys and young men who struggle to remain in school and spend time on the streets, providing them with an outlet and a chance to develop their skills. Zvenyika says that some of the kids are extremely poor and not even attending school, while others are discouraged from training due to a lack of basic necessities like shoes. A young boy, Noel Sunday, is one of the beneficiaries of Zvenyika’s training, and his story reflects the harsh realities of life in the suburb.

Sunday’s parents are unemployed, and he was only able to complete a few years of schooling, a situation that Zvenyika is all too familiar with, having grown up in similar circumstances. Zvenyika’s experiences have driven him to share his knowledge of boxing with less privileged children, giving them a chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

Zvenyika’s training sessions are a regular occurrence, with up to 20 young people gathering several times a week to develop their fitness and technical skills. The training takes place under a corrugated iron roof, a humble setting that belies the impact that Zvenyika is having on the lives of these young people. As Zvenyika himself says, “The champions always come from the ghetto”, a testament to the determination and resilience of those who have overcome adversity to achieve success.

As the story of Zvenyika and his young trainees continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the importance of community and the impact that one person can have on the lives of others. While the road ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, the encouraging part is the dedication and perseverance shown by Zvenyika and his students, a quality that will serve them well in their future endeavors.

Patients should be aware that with the right support and guidance, they can overcome even the most daunting obstacles, and talk to your doctor about the ways in which they can get involved in their community and make a positive impact. With hope and perseverance, anything is possible, so consult your doctor.
