A24's IP Shift Drives Record Box Office and Acquisition Speculation

A24 has just wrapped production on the $200 million “Elden Ring” adaptation, the studio’s biggest financial swing to date, while its domestic box office has topped $500 million for the first time.

From Indie Cult to Blockbuster Contender

Founded in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel and John Hodges, A24 built its reputation on low‑budget arthouse titles such as “Moonlight” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which together earned 98 Academy Award nominations and 21 wins. The company’s early strategy hinged on acquiring daring filmmakers and niche audiences, a formula that generated cultural cachet but limited revenue potential.

In recent years the calculus has shifted. The studio’s 2026 slate includes the Gen Z horror breakout “Backrooms,” which pushed $200 million at the box office, and the documentary “You Can See Everything,” a critical hit. Those successes propelled A24 past the $500 million domestic box office milestone, positioning it as the most nominated studio at this year’s Oscars.

Strategic IP Acquisitions and Bigger Budgets

The “Elden Ring” film, starring Kit Connor and directed by Alex Garland, represents a decisive move into high‑budget IP, with a $200 million price tag. This mirrors a broader trend: A24 is now courting established franchises and video‑game properties, a departure from its earlier focus on original, auteur‑driven projects.

Internally, the shift is underpinned by a deliberate growth plan. Since hiring former NBA CFO J.B. Lockhart in 2021, the studio has bolstered its financial infrastructure, while COO Matt Bires and global TV head Ravi Nandan have overseen expansion into television, delivering hits on Peacock, HBO and Apple. The TV division’s success—titles like “Crystal Lake,” “Neighbors,” and “Margot’s Got Money Troubles”—adds a steady revenue stream that supports larger film budgets.

Acquisition Speculation and Market Implications

With the studio’s market value rising, industry observers note that “if they’re ever going to monetize, this is the time to do it”. A24 has historically rebuffed overtures from Apple and Sony, protecting its creative independence. Yet the recent surge in cash flow and IP assets has reignited speculation about a potential sale or equity partnership.

For the independent film ecosystem, A24’s pivot signals a new strategic frontier. Smaller studios may feel pressure to secure high‑profile IP or forge TV alliances to remain competitive, while distributors could see a consolidation of talent under fewer, financially robust banners.

What This Signals for the Industry

The move from scrappy indie to blockbuster‑level player illustrates how a studio can leverage a strong brand to command premium content deals without surrendering its identity. A24’s ability to generate $500 million domestically while maintaining critical acclaim suggests that the independent model can scale, provided it embraces larger budgets and strategic IP acquisition.

Next week, A24 is slated to begin production on “Goblin,” a raunchy comedy featuring Chase Sui Wonders alongside Kenneth Branagh, further diversifying its portfolio.
