The American television game show Wheel of Fortune entered a new phase on September 9, 2024, with Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White assuming hosting duties and Jim Thornton serving as announcer. The program, created by Merv Griffin, first aired on January 6, 1975, and has remained a fixture of American television for nearly half a century.

Contestants compete by solving word puzzles and winning cash and prizes determined by spinning a large carnival wheel. The show’s history includes several hosting changes and format evolutions. The original daytime network version debuted on NBC on January 6, 1975, and continued until June 30, 1989.

Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford served as the initial hosts for this daytime series. Woolery departed in 1981, and Pat Sajak replaced him.

Sajak’s tenure became a defining period for the program, as he later hosted the nighttime syndicated version that premiered on September 19, 1983, and has aired continuously since. From 1983 until 1991, both the network daytime and syndicated nighttime versions of Wheel of Fortune aired simultaneously. This arrangement expanded the show’s audience and strengthened its position in American television. The original daytime series also aired on CBS from July 17, 1989, to January 11, 1991, before returning to NBC for a brief run from January 14, 1991, to September 20, 1991.

Throughout its many years on air, the core format has remained consistent. Contestants solve word puzzles to earn cash and prizes tied to spins of the giant carnival wheel.

The show’s ability to maintain this central appeal while adapting over time has contributed to its lasting popularity. Wheel of Fortune has become deeply embedded in American television culture. Its iconic wheel and puzzle-solving structure have been referenced and parodied extensively in popular media, reflecting the program’s broader cultural impact. As the show continues under its new hosting team, it remains in nightly syndication, offering viewers regular episodes and competitive challenges.

With Seacrest and White now leading the program, the series is positioned to continue its tradition of entertainment while bringing a fresh dynamic to the screen. Fans can expect the same excitement and puzzle-solving format that has defined Wheel of Fortune for decades, as the show moves forward with its new hosting duo at the center of the production.
