Josh Peck Reveals Pay Was Below Typical Lead Actor Salary

Josh Peck

Josh Peck was a child star on a hit Nickelodeon show. He played the lead. And he didn’t make what people think.

The actor who played Josh Nichols on Drake & Josh recently talked about the pay gap on that set. He earned less than fans would guess.

Not the millions. Not the life-changing money. Less.

Peck did not give exact numbers. He did not name a figure.

But he made it clear: the compensation was far below what a lead on a popular network show usually gets. The revelation landed in Los Angeles on June 26. This is not a new problem.

It is an old one. Think about Jennifer Lopez. In 1997 she played Selena Quintanilla.

She became the first Latina actress to earn $1 million for a film. That was a statement.

“I was too young and didn’t know what the hell was going on,” Lopez told Variety in 2019. “It was great they offered me a million dollars. I feel like everyone was making a statement.” That million-dollar paycheck opened doors.

Lopez went on to earn hundreds of millions. But even she sometimes works for free.

“I do things because I love them,” she told GQ in 2019. “I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers. I did it for free and produced it.

I bank on myself, you know? Like Jenny From the Block—I do what I love.” Peck’s situation is different. He was a kid.

He did not have Lopez’s leverage. He did not have her fame yet.

He had a contract on a kids’ network. And that contract paid him less than the audience assumed. For families across the Philippines and Asia, this matters. Drake & Josh was shared entertainment.

Kids watched it with siblings, with cousins, with parents. The show was a fixture.

The financial reality behind it was not. The broader conversation is about fair pay for young performers. Hollywood has a long history of underpaying child actors.

Some lost their earnings. Some were cheated by parents or managers. Some just got lowballed from the start.

Peck’s story fits that pattern. He was a lead.

He was recognizable. But the paycheck did not match the role. This is not a scandal.

It is a data point. Another example of how the business works for young talent.

The show was successful. The network made money. The actors?

That is a different question. Lopez’s experience shows the other side. A big payday early can change everything.

It can set a standard. It can force the industry to recognize value.

But that only happens if someone is willing to pay it. And someone has to be willing to demand it. Peck was too young to demand anything.

He did not know what was happening. That is the reality for most child actors.

They show up. They perform. They take what they are given.

The result is a gap between what fans see and what the stars earn. Fans assume success equals money. Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it does not. Peck’s revelation is a reminder.

The entertainment industry is not fair. It never was. And for kids who grow up on screen, the payoff is not always what it looks like from the living room couch.
