For more than four decades Vanna White has been turning letters on Wheel of Fortune. Ryan Seacrest has spent a similar span in front of television cameras.
On September 9, 2024 the two appeared together in a role that had never been filled before, serving as co‑hosts of the same episode. This marked the first occasion since 1981 that someone other than Pat Sajak took charge of the puzzles and the on‑air banter. White began her tenure on the program in 1982 and remained in her familiar position. Seacrest assumed the hosting duties that had long belonged to Sajak.
Jim Thornton continued as the show’s announcer. The series itself traces its origins to Merv Griffin, who launched it on January 6, 1975, meaning the program has been on the air for nearly fifty years.
The lasting success of Wheel of Fortune is the true narrative. It has endured shifts between networks, numerous host changes, and the emergence of streaming platforms. The original daytime version aired on NBC from 1975 to 1989, moved to CBS from July 1989 to January 1991, and returned to NBC for a final eight‑month stretch.
Meanwhile, a syndicated nighttime edition debuted on September 19, 1983 and has never ceased production. For eight years, from 1983 until 1991, the daytime and nighttime versions ran concurrently — an uncommon circumstance in television where most series receive only a single opportunity.
Both iterations proved viable, with the daytime run concluding and the nighttime version becoming the program most people associate with the title. Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford were the inaugural hosts. Woolery departed in 1981, paving the way for Pat Sajak to step in.
When the syndicated nighttime version launched in 1983, Sajak transitioned to that format and remained there for forty‑one years. His lengthy stewardship earned him a status comparable to Bob Barker’s association with The Price Is Right.
