Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Turns Theranos Fraud Into a Theatrical Event

Holmes’s Rise and the $9 Billion Valuation

Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos in 2003, and its valuation soared in the early 2010s after it claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by developing methods that needed only very small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick. In 2015, Forbes named Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in the United States on the basis of a $9 billion valuation of Theranos. The credibility of Theranos was attributed in part to Holmes’s personal connections and ability to recruit the support of influential people, including Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, Jim Mattis, and Betsy DeVos, all of whom had served or went on to serve as U.S. presidential cabinet officials.

The Fraud and the SEC Charges

In 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Theranos, Holmes, and former Theranos chief operating officer (COO) Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani with raising $700 million from investors through a fraud involving false or exaggerated claims about the accuracy of the company’s blood-testing technology. Holmes settled the charges by paying a $500,000 no admit no deny (NAND) fine, returning 18.9 million shares to the company, relinquishing her voting control of Theranos, and accepting a ten-year ban from serving as an officer or director of a public company. Holmes was in a clandestine romantic relationship with Balwani throughout most of Theranos’s history. Holmes and Balwani jointly ran the company with a “dysfunctional corporate culture” of “secrecy and fear” according to employees. Staff also claimed that those who “raised concerns or objections” were “usually marginalized or fired” by the pair.

The Sentence and Restitution

Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors and acquitted of defrauding patients in January 2022. She was sentenced to serve 11+1⁄4 years at Federal Prison Camp, Bryan, beginning on May 30, 2023. She and Balwani were ordered to pay $452 million in restitution to the victims of the fraud. Holmes was acquitted of all four charges related to defrauding patients; she is in prison because a jury found she knowingly misled investors who poured more than $700 million into the startup.

The Documentary Debut and Its Impact

You Can See Everything debuted in the first days of September as a secret addition to the Telluride Film Festival. The film is codirected by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and begins as a 34-day psychological dance between Fielder, Elizabeth Holmes, and her partner Billy Evans before Holmes’s incarceration. Following its debut, the buzz following Telluride was nothing short of an online thermonuclear event: Reddit forums exploded; best-in-class memes were born overnight; every journalist on planet Earth, including the staff at WIRED (who had no idea their boss was NDA’d to hell, and seemed confused when I ordered them repeatedly not to contact Nathan Fielder’s publicist), pined, pleaded, and jockeyed for access to the film.

Why the Film Resonates and What It Means for Silicon Valley

What makes the documentary so brilliant is that it forces you to confront how much of what you believe about another person comes from how their story has been told to you. And we are so so susceptible to this that it’s scary. Think about Elizabeth Holmes. How much of your opinion of her comes from the facts of her criminal case & how much comes from the images and/or videos and/or TV dramas you’ve seen over the years? The Theranos scandal reshape Silicon Valley’s ‘fake it till you make it’ culture by exposing how storytelling and perception can eclipse factual substance, especially when amplified by influential networks and media narratives.

The Downfall Begins: Media Scrutiny and Valuation Collapse

By 2015, a wave of journalistic and regulatory investigations started to erode Theranos’s mythos, casting doubt on the company’s blood‑testing claims and on whether Holmes had been truthful with investors and the government. The scrutiny marked the beginning of Theranos’s rapid decline, as the once‑glamorous startup faced mounting questions about the accuracy of its technology.

That same year, Forbes, which had previously celebrated Holmes as the youngest self‑made female billionaire on the basis of a $9 billion valuation, revised its estimate of her net worth to zero. The reassessment reflected the growing skepticism surrounding Theranos’s business model and the widening gap between its public narrative and internal realities. In response, Fortune included Holmes in its feature article on “The World’s 19 Most Disappointing Leaders,” underscoring how quickly public perception shifted from admiration to disappointment.

Holmes’s Personal Life After Theranos Collapse

Following the collapse of Theranos, Holmes started dating hotel heir William “Billy” Evans, with whom she has had two children (born in 2021 and 2023). This relationship began after her clandestine romantic relationship with former COO Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani ended, which had lasted throughout most of Theranos’s history. Holmes and Evans have maintained a relatively low public profile compared to her earlier high-profile associations with figures like Henry Kissinger and George Shultz.

Holmes’s Acquittal on Patient Fraud Charges

Elizabeth Holmes was acquitted of all four charges related to defrauding patients in January 2022. The jury found that she knowingly misled investors who poured more than $700 million into Theranos. This distinction was emphasized in the documentary You Can See Everything, which highlights how public perception often overlooks the legal nuance of her convictions. The film underscores that Holmes remains incarcerated solely due to investor fraud, not patient harm.
